So, who all is staying here this summer? Does anyone want to play Assassin? (heh heh...) I'm not staying here this summer, but I _would_ like very much to play Assassin. Beat that pre-exam stress! -- gjd My current understanding of summer groups: Myself (julie love), Diana, Michael Bernstein, and Jed (if he gets a certain job) in the Williams' house on Rutgers, DVS and MattKat in a house on Yale, Geoff H, Chris C, Laura A, and Wayne F (with room for one more) in a house with cats and plants (hopefully), Laurie Sorgen renting a room in Media, Jim, Perry, and Gabby Sacks home (but home's near Philly), Laura Cleland in Germantown (Philly), and Bruce and Brian (not necessarily together) somewhere in the area. I personally have no interest in assasin, but would love to find a d&d game when we don't have classes to deal with. Also, our house will be having coffeehouses every week or two; everyone's welcome. Story readings would also be nice. We'll probably have a big start-of-summer backyard party in June. Alex and Rick: Working & living in home area, but home area between 1 and 2 hour drive away, therefore reasonably close. Hey -- what jobs do folks have? I know Wayne and Chris have been hired by McCave, Geoff is getting paid for playing on the Apollos the way he has been all semester, Bruce, MattKat and DVS are doing something mathematical, Jed is hoping for a job programming in "C" (don't ask me) (and will go home if he doesn't get it), and Diana might be counting trees. Myself, I'm hoping for the admissions office envelope-stuffer and tourguide job. Anyone else? As some know, Chris, Geoff, Laura, and I did not get our house. C, G, and I (wayne) are going to look at the space above the movie theater. It is for 500 a month, but we can get all three in there. If anyone knows of a place for Laura, or of other possible openings for houses, etc, please tell one of us. Also, assuming I am here, I am the possessor of a car, with four wheels and all. If any one needs transport, etc, they are free to give me a call, and we will see what can be worked out. Julie, sorry about the admissions office, good luck with the Alumni job. There is still hope that we, Chris, et al, will get a space for the summer. I think that we have a good shot at the movie apartment. jWe shall see. Is there anyone else looking at this besides myself? I'm (Brian) looking....and trying to find a housemate who would PAY RENT. I've got lots of friends with the nutty idea that they can find free housing this summer. If only I were so hopeful... Great demonstration of bureaucracy here: I have been talking to/harassing various administrative types like Janet Dickerson and Dave Fraser for a few weeks now, saying they must do something about the summer housing problem. They all insisted that it is impossible. Today I went in to give Jim England the same spiel, and was told that he knows, and is currently putting together a proposal for the exact thing. It probably won't go through for this summer (too soon), but almost certainly starting next year. So, if we can just get through this summer.... Jed has gotten his summer job, so our house officially consists of julie, diana, mike, and jed. this, unfortunately, re-adds laura to the homeless group of wayne, chris and geoff. We have a home!!, this is wayne, et al. We will be living next door to the movie theater on 320. The only problem is that it looks like we willnot be able to get into the place until about the middle of the month. If there is anyone that can put all, or some of us up for the first part of the month of June, at latest until the 15th, please let one of us know. Thanks, see you this summer!! Is there anyone else even looking at this other than myself (wayne)? I would like to here more about what people are doing for the summer, not just here, but where ever you are going. good idea/question; i'm curious too. i check this often but haven't added anything because i imagine my obsessive discussion of the summer plans of those stayng here is getting rather thick. -- julie Well, so far I think it is just the two of us. I will mention to people at the meeting on Sat. that this is here, and that they should add to it as they like. --wf Hey, I'm reading! I'm just not adding anything, 'cause I don't have anything to add. Working at Chi-Chi's for 11 weeks just isn't that exciting, folks. --Alex (me too)--j.e.h. Alex, it is better than nothing, and you get to be on top of a mountain in the process. That is not all that bad. i have a home for most of limbo -- by ushering at commencement, i get to stay in the dorm (have to move to ml, though) till 6/1 for free. there are advantages to junior-hood, after all! --love i have officially accepted a part time job for the summer, babysitting a 14-mo-old tues, wed, and fri. so i'll be the one looking maternal. still waiting for parrish to fill in the other half of the week, or i might work in the pet store. children and animals, whee.... That sounds like you will have a better time that chris and i will in the library. I hope that the other things work out as well for you. Doing what in the library? G.O.K. (John Halbert) has some nice little horror stories baout workingin Government Documents last summer... (making his first appearance in this too-little-read file) -jim what are YOU doing this summer, jim? Looks as though my job w/ Bilaniuk (physics 'gnome') has happened. I'll be living @ home (just north of Philly, a Septaride away) and commuting, and doing lots of library research and a THEORY PROJECT OF MY VERY OWN! (His idea for the topic, of course). BCNU! so you'll be on campus days! wonderful! even better than that!! looking forward to having you around jim. i hope chris and i have a better time in the library than john did last year. ** TLA pilgrimage ** may 27 or 28 (i think) TLA has the double feature of _alienS_ and the modern remake of _The_Fly_. I plan to go. --julie there shall be a summer starting / house warming / pot-luck "barbeque" at our house the first saturday we're there ( une 12). hosted by julie, diana, jed and mike. more specifics will be created and communicated later. Hello this is Bruce. I just made the mistake of typing a long mess here while logged in under my student account; I then found out that I couldn't save what I had just typed. Oh well. I will be living in Ann McNamee's house which is two blocks away from DuPont and is next door to Professor Grinstead, for whom I will be working this summer. I will not be living with Brian, but will apparently be living with Mark Van Wyk, who is also working for Grinstead. Anybody who wants to contact me can send electronic mail on this machine or paper mail to the standard Swarthmore College address (the post office DOES keep going, doesn't it?). And if you drop into the Sun lab (I think that's where we'll be) during working hours (9-5 weekdays?), you can see me, DVS, Matt, Mark, and any other happy people who happen to be in the area. So come bother us if you want to; I don't think anybody will particularly mind short visits. Re AD&D: sounds nice, although I don't have any of my manuals here. Anybody for Illuminati? (Laura has the game...) Re BBQ: sounds goooood to me; I'll go for free food anytime, especially when I don't have to cook it myself. I still can't see myself dealing with this; at least I have my "Starving Student's Cookbook" for cooking imbeciles such as myself. Have fun (ha!) during limbo, Bruce Hahne. Oh, I don't mind cooking so much, sounds fun. But what I'd give to have a roof.... The best laid plans of mice and men gang oianaglay not sure mine were so well laid though -bran wow, summer is here, isn't it? (Bruce: you can save to your student account or to FILE_TRANSFER, then copy (if necessary) to FILE_TRANSFER, then logout and login under SWIL and copy from FILE_TRANSFER to SWIL...) midnight Tues., June 2: Wow, limbo's fun! I've got a whole building to myself... Hope everyone has found dry, comfortable, friendly places to sleep tonight! Hey, how are we going to keep in touch over the next few days? (Those of us who have to work elsewhere most of the time that people are in the sunlab, that is)? If people are sleeping on the Crum any (drier) night, I'd like to join you! How about leaving a message here if Crum-sleeping plans arise, maybe? Campus is beautiful! Life is wonderful! LiLAP! -Diana Oh! Wish I had seen this a couple days ago - Chris & Javan & I slept in ampitheater last night, and it can't have rained for more than 15 mins ... Some problem with small insects all crowding around to find out your blood type, but if you can live with that ... Actually, seems greater problem will be in contacting those who do have a place ... We may be homeless, but watermelon makes pink lemonade if you don't care about the second part. (and they say to much time in the side does heh heh things heh to your ouyr bwain ... If any of you with better places to go feel like not doing so, i would also be interested in sleeping by the crum (one small step for insomnia ...) Of course, i don't know if i can be quite that (WOW! EUPHORIA UBER ALLES! (strange image, that)) enthusiastic, but at least i'll (i think i can) try. nice to know somebody is. does anyone know when mike is due? [I didn't even know he was expecting! :-)] - Ranjiet Alkesh Peterson III, senior waif representing a place most people already know about. (Heirarchy of waifitude) oh, also, any new information on saturday? and, of course, lest i forget my foresworn duty: (a bit late for some, i know ...) (hope somebody out there used to listen to the Cure) Let's Find a Bed Filked from 'Let's Go to Bed' by the Cure I am freezing cold - where is there a quilt? Turning, turning blue with all of the insects on the floor Dream of a place where it's warm or even like Pitt Just us and Swat together again - And were all out here in the rain. Have other housing i don't Have food for eating i don't Hot bath for washing in i don't But i won't say it if you won't say it oh You think you're tired now but wait until three Wishing for a drier room - remember from the school year Past - midnight patrols again we've got to move a place less tame Half alive out in the rain it's a chilly game, a tiring game And i've no food if you don't And i've no house if you don't And i've no money if you don't And i won't play it if you won't play it oh It's too dark to see now - tell me which is the way Wonder if we'd lose if we just broke into Hicks Through a shut window and into the bathoom The insects come with us as we lay here and were never alone But i don't sleep if you don't And i don't eat if you don't And i've no patience if you don't And i won't take it if you won't take it oh - oh oh oh oh let's find a bed oh - oh oh oh oh let's find a bed for all of you who don't let little things like noone ever reading this file bother you, Wayne is going to Washington last and this weekend. Do they have a fourth of July in Russia? yes, they have the day that comes between the 3rd and 5th of July, but they ignore it as much as we ignore the first of May (Mayday) ignoring a mayday? sure hope i'm never an american pilot ... well, at least we don't shoot them down... (caught on suspicion of unknown historical reference ...?) Jessica is coming next weekend! Bounce!!!! (twenty somethingth of July) (and sister, though not too many round these parts any too cognizant of her) how was Full Metal Jacket? Wow! There are indeed people writing in this outstanding file again! Neat! . . . I hear Full Metal Jacket was excellent, including sometimes sort of quietly (?) funny. Not sure how a war movie can be 'funny'. . . Nice filk! (wish i knew the tune) Anybody like lightbulb jokes? Apparently there are some really great ones floating around on the Net (anybody know where?). Another NEW ALIEN POWER: STUDENT. "You have the power of SLEEPLESSNESS. On any turn, you may pull an 'allnighter'-- take two turns (4 attacks) at once. However, doing this will necessarily cause you to 'crash'-- that is, unless you are the defensive main player in a challenge, you must refrain from any sort of active participation in the game until your turn naturally comes up again. (Do not make deals, ally, play an edict {including Timegash}, or exercise any other alien power {except Terrorist or Schizoid} while crashing." Unfortunately, that sounds like a mandatory power ... For other interested parties, the lightbulb joke list may no longer exist exept in the esteemed possession of Mr. Jed Hartman Esq. Ask at the door. Any games out there besides diplomacy, bridge, and the other one (ce)? (not counting bambi meets godzilla style) this file seems almost at an end, but then so does summer. hope everyone enjoyed it as much as i did. also i just got a letter from jenn austrian, she sends hellos to all here and is doing well, she will be back on the 1st of sept. when are others reported to be returning? Hey, what's wrong with Diplomacy? Anyone interested in another Diplomacy session, now that people know the rules already? I'm in! -jIm nothing wrong with it, though `tis a bit long. Give it something like: single win 12 bases owned by one player double win 18 bases total between two players triple win 24 bases total between three players etc., and i`d be very happy to be take on (and be backstabbed by) the world. also give me note if anyone want`s half game to be played. - Ranjiet How about this weekend (22nd or 23rd)? BTW, no one would be able to get a double or triple win in Diplomacy, except in extremely bizarre cases (such as one nation gaining more than 7 supply centers in one season). Some methods for shortening the play time: 1) Limit negotiating time to 15 minutes. No buts, no "wait one second"s. Talking efficiently is a sign of a good Diplomacy player. 2) Limit the playing time. Decide on a time when the game will end and whoever has the most supply centers at the time will win. 3) As Geoff suggested, lower the winning number of supply centers. A side-effect of this rule will be more viciousness and backstabbing, since someone can win very easily. Long-term alliances will be crushed if they're too good. If the balance of power is maintained, this game could go on forever. 4) Combine #2 and #3. The winner is the person who gets 12 s.c. or the person with the most s.c. at the end. This might be a good game. 5) Let alliances be winners. That is, any alliance that (no more than three, preferably only two) controls 18 supply centers is the winner. The effect of this will be last-minute alliances at the end to end the game. Not much excitment will be left as the game progresses since people will have less incentive to backstab others. Any takers? I, for one, will play anytime, anyday! Yeah, hah, hah, drool, drool... -AG Hirai (Confessed Diplomaddict) o AG Hirai o Jim? o comments on that : time limit is a good idea, both for moves and overall (i would like to play another long time limit game though sometime) (perhaps two - three moves per week, as it has a much different flavor) #5, without the gradation (more allies need more bases) would eliminate single wins altogether, and would lead to team v team play, which is not the point of diplomacy (any ninja around would wait till the very end of the game, then backstab by allting with a rich member of another team, suddenly achieving a win in a way impossible to prevent and therefore somewhat unsatisfactory) There must be some gradation we can achive that lets pseudo - pacifists play without forbidding a "'tis better to rule in hell" philosophy by the way, "double win" means two - player win, with 18 bases between them (now clarified above, sorry for the misunderstanding) - Ranjiet PS: You think we could get the computing center to set up a 'gaming' bullitin board so we don't have to carry on this carrying on in Summerplans? Yes, sounds like a good idea - if the CC is willing (big IF). Another idea is this. I'll be more than willing to participate/moderate/GM a play-by-email Diplomacy game right here on the Prime. Players can email their moves to the moderator and he/she can post the results on USERS or (maybe) GAMING. People can hold negotiations with others while eating and stuff. Secret negotiations will be possible -- something you cannot do in a face-to-face Diplomacy game! Postings on the bulletin boards will garner enthusiasm and interest too! The mail system on this Prime is somewhat (not totally) secure. Any takers/players? -AG Hirai Check me up for a definate possibility - though i haven't played enough to be able to visualize really well (cannon fodder time, n'est-ce pas?) - Ranjiet How about somebody separating the above into Dippy stuff and summer stuff and either deleting or archiving (that word again) the summer stuff? Not that we NEED the room in this account, but it's just one more stray file to be fed and cleaned... I wouldn't mind if the Dippy stuff is deleted - all the relevant stuff is in either Geoff's or my head, or on USERS. -AG
