From chaos @ cs.swarthmore.edu Sat Jul 17 20:55:54 1999 Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 11:33:31 -0500 (EST) From: Chaos Golubitsky To: _swat.org.swil @ cc Subject: How is this SWILNews #8 different from all other SWILNewsi? 1) it's shorter. SWILBusiness: (Just so y'all don't leave this e-mail completely bored (or maybe to ensure that you do -c), we'll throw in all the irrelevant comments in our notes.) Abby is being disorderly by throwing napkins (with shitty aim -d) at dagger. Cloak left a CD on pause in ML the morning of meeting. It all turned out okay, though. SWILCon was happening. SWILCon had been happening for awhile before the meeting, and SWILCon continued to happen for awhile after the meeting. SWILCon is a continuous function of t defined over the interval 26-27 March. The book list was read. Now the book list has been written. We will ask BC for money for these books, and then go get them, and maybe a few others. Note: one or two of these are replacements for books that were in Cordwainer and ran away. If you have them, please tell us *now* and return them. Thanks. Also, if you're planning to donate some books to Cordwainer, let us know and check the listing on merlin at ~chaos/swil/cordwainer.txt to see if we already have a copy. (If you don't have a merlin account, let Cloak know, and she'll e-mail you a copy of the list.) Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett Good Omens C. S. Lewis The Magician's Nephew Prince Caspian Susan Cooper The Grey King Ursula Leguin A Wizard of Earthsea Greg Frost Crimson Spear Neil Gaiman Stardust Robin McKinley The Blue Sword Beauty Robert Silverberg Legends: Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy Gardner Dozois had some suggestions for schlock, namely, "Robot Monster" and "The Aztec Mummy vs. the Wrestling Women". We will look into this. Next week's movie is "Kiki's Delivery Service". Jimmosk has foolishly volunteered to collect challenges for challenge chess. If you have a challenge idea, e-mail him (jimmosk @ fi.edu). Will has volunteered to collect pieces. A list will be sent around at next week's SWIL meeting. (i wanna be the black knight. -c) "this is the indecipherable squiggle that the copresidents don't understand." (this is the pen that wrote the indecipherable squiggle that the copresidents don't understand. this is the backpack that held the pen that wrote the indecipherable squiggle that the copresidents don't understand. this is fun! -c) Non-SWILBusiness: People should do folk dance. But we have 16 for maypole. Yay! Circling the Square interviewed Dr. Bronner about soap. Jimmosk has decided to start Swarthmore Exchange Tapes (SET), a quick and dirty version of Swapa Rotating Tapes (SRT), not to be confused with Squid Quantifying Theory (SQT). Thirteen people have signed up thus far, so there are two tapes. If you want to be involved, contact Jim. There will be a roundsinging Saturday at 3pm in the belltower. (That would be this Saturday, not some arbitrary past Saturday, meaning that you can and should still go to this.) The premiere of Futurama was Sunday at 8. Apparently, it was very good. There is a South Park Star Wars trailer. Unfortunately, the sound is about 2 seconds off the picture, so it's a little weird. So far, we have six people interested in camping out all day in line for Star Wars tickets on opening night, and playing either Britannia or Hispania. Cloak has spontaneously volunteered to organize this, so if you're planning to be around and want to come with us, let her know. the attendance list of pain, anguish, and abject misery - 27/3: Alecia "does 'nocturnal' qualify as pain & abject misery?"
