Date: Thu, 15 Apr 93 14:02:18 -0400 To: _swat.org.swil @ math.wisc.edu From: jthorpe1 @ cc.swarthmore.edu Subject: The parents are coming. Let's git 'em! (By the way, this is a SWILnews. Just so ya know. And I think it has the longest subject line I've seen in a while, at least 'til somebody replies and puts a Re: on the front.) Well, Greg Frost has been and gone and a grand total of seven people were there to see him. He was a very cool guy. He read from his latest book (three chapters) and thouroughly engrossed those who were there. (He was going to read only two, but we gently urged him to go on.) One or more of us should be purchasing his new novel when it comes out (next week sometime), so let somebody know if you'd like to borrow it. Plus, Birdwainer will have a copy soon if all goes well. Between chapters, he regaled us with stories of Harlan Ellison, Samuel "Chip" Delaney, and other Big Names he has met (including Mike Jittlov). We discussed the state of the SF market today and where he thinks it is going, the evils of the publishing business, and Piers Anthony. (Now _that_ was interesting.) Over dinner, the conversation had turned to Pink Floyd (and why a Muzak version of The Wall was being piped in), MST:3K (he loves it), and how the legalization of marijuana (well, hemp) could revitalize the south. All in all, a very entertaining and friendly guy who seems to have written a very entertaining and bizarre book with top-of-the-line research in it. (We also tricked him into admitting that he's working on an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation. Heh heh.) I've determined that tomorrow morning will be a good time to talk to Tedd about obtaining Bond bits for George, so that's when I'll go. Let y'all know the results at the SWIL meeting. I think we'll need some strong backs (and a car) to actually move the contents at some point, too, unless Tedd volunteers some B&G folks. Keep your volunteering arms primed... The Sharples people claim that we have rights to room 4, now and for always, and the Upward Bound people shouldn't be there. They said they'd chat with the leader about why we kept getting kicked out... Speaking of SWIL, know that we will be doing the final voting for Schlock on Saturday. We looked through the catalog last meeting, but were just too slow to vote. Thus it has been postponed, so we'll have another meeting to pick the bad, bad films WE want to watch. I've got the catalogs in my room, so feel free to stop by (ML4302) if you want advance searching. Remember: parents love SWILmeetings! Bring them to be confused. Mine'll be there... Kendra is officially in charge of the Walpurgisnacht story reading (which will actually fall on that fateful day this year). Sometime on Friday, April 30th, we will gather (in Hallowell basement?) to read things. Any things y'all like, be it Stephen King or erotica or this thing you wrote in 3rd grade. We might not listen, but you can read it. :)= That's about it for vital things everybody should know. Remember to show up Saturday, just like these people did last week: ATTENDANCE for 4:10:93 David "Where the censored is the Onceler?" R [Hey, he showed up moments after this was written. So there. :P No, wait a minute--I'M the Onceler. What are you going on about? --O]; Charles "I don't want to be part of your dance if I can't revolt." X.; Samuel "Caulk" Weiler; Kathy "My feet, My feet, My feet...Aaahh" Davis; Jim "in silent separation as the English sway." [Almost...ALMOST...a Pink Floyd line. But not quite. --O] MacCleod; (Note: that is a misspelling, hence forgery! Call the FBI! The correct, authentic appelation is just "Jim," dammit!) [Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a forger! --O]; Kendra "Extremely svelte--especially the shoes" Eshleman; Justin INDUSTRIOUS Giacolletti [And all of us who are your lab partners are so grateful... --O]; Melissa "this is the feast of the Assumption, not a drunken wedding!" Shaner [Sorry, we just assumed... --O]; Jen "Supress that guinea pig!" Setlow; Josh "Flying pepper" Burdick; Robert "Close enough to not being here" Richardson; Lawrence of Arabia; Geoff "Chopped up little bits of stuff in an omelette" Noer; Lesley "Technically wasn't here" Tsina; Peter "Rain."
