The first SWILNEWS in a month, 3/28/91 How much is happening is SWIL right now? So much that the mice are..., wait nevermind. Still a whole lot of stuff is happening Real Soon. In the deadline department, BEM needs you! Submit stories, poems, artwork, even the kitchen sink. (Well, maybe not the sink unless you've got alien life forms growing in it.) The deadline is April 1st, but it may be extended somewhat if there isn't enough material. But don't take that chance. Submit now! Also with a deadline of April 1st is the t-shirt orders. If you haven't signed up for one of the elegent pieces of attire, talk to Nao. The slogan is "In the SWIL of the night." Samuel Delany is coming! Soon! As in just over one week, on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. See the Weekly News and the signs that will go up next week for exact details of when and where he will be speaking. He will be giving several talks and a reading over the course of the weekend. I strongly urge everyone to go to as many of these as possible. The weekend after that is Parents' Weekend and we know what that means. Live Chess will happen at 2:30, either on Parrish lawn or in Parrish Commons if the weather is as foul as it usually is. We still need players (who can take any position they want) and people to fill out the ranks. Talk to Josh Smith if interested. Then the next weekend is the Steeleye Span/Bobs concert which has become the Fairport Convention/Bobs concert. Then on April 26th is the spring Pterodactyl Hunt. We need monsters galore, so if you want to whomp a whole bunch of players, sign up with Stephen Sample. Other things. The schlock film fest is coming up soon. We'll decide what movies to show in a couple weeks, so get ideas ready. If we have refreshments budget left after Delany's appearence here we may have a post-Walpurgishnacht story reading around May 3rd. (Hmm, after the early showing of Princess Bride perhaps.) The meeting on May 11th has been moved to room 5, across the lobby from our usual room. If there are books you'd like to see in Birdwainer, tell Stephen Sample. Book review: Treason by Orson Scott Card. Some books suffer from Deus ex Machina, This book suffers from Dei ex Machina. (i.e. on more than one score.) The main character winds up just happening to be the best ever seen at a ridiculously wide range of obscure skills picked up all over the place, and these skills just happen to be very handy. Although he extensively rewrote it for this re-release, the fact that this is one of Card's earliest novels shows very clearly. Stay away.
