Swilnews (6)(7) A Double Issue "Twice as fun, twice as wide, but it does demand a little stretch of the imagination" Welcome friends, to the latest technological advance in communications hardware, software, wetware?, ah paperware, yes. It's wide. (This explanation is provided for those subscribers who have made the quantum leap to e-mail and thus still receive a narrow swil- news. For the rest of you it should be superfluous information, unless of course you choose not to believe the evidence of your senses, in which case this will be an informative aside, but then if you don't trust the evidence of your senses, you may not believe what you read hear, and so consider this either "false data" or "merely intended to give artistic versimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative," or something. Well, back to the news.) The first news we bring your attention is the monumental cosmic importance of this particular swilnews. Those of you who are numerologically inclined, or like to Hitch-hike, should be able to discern this fact for yourselves. For the rest of you (except those who don't trust the evidence of your senses but we already covered that eventuality in the last aside), consider (6)(7) as a mathematical expression... News 6 (a long time ago) T-Shirts. "That's what it was. Mountains of green, teal, and fuschia (sp?) t-shirts! All around me! I was drowning..." Not a very convincing scenario for a horror film, I'm afraid. But it should be a convincing news item (T-shirts, that is) from meeting 6, (unless you don't trust the evidence of your senses). Swil brain-stormed, cogitated, debated, voted (result Swil 1, others 0) and came up with a Spring 1989 T-shirt slogan and design theme: T-shirt front "Swil: It's a particle!" T-shirt back "Swil: It's a wave!" Picture on the front of a live cat, picture on the back of a dead cat. Why the cat, you may ask? Does physics have any cuddly mascots besides Schroedinger's cat? Why ask these rhetorical questions, you may ask? No reason, actually, except I get tired of periods (Period pieces can just be so dull -- no enquiry or excitement). Period. In any case, that's the slogan and the design theme. We will decide on Color(s) as soon as we have an actual drawing. Soon hopefully. Then Came Break. Then Came News 7 (not so very long ago, nor so very far away) News -- Item 1 --Bruce, Minister of Information Dispersal, volunteered to organize Live Chess. News flash -- Bruce may not be here Parents' Week-end, so he is searching for a deputy Chessperson to set up the board and make the final preparations on Parents' Day. Rumour -- Spontaneous live checkers may break out on the live chess board. Item 2 -- Our intrepid crew of budgeteers went before budget committee and asked for money for Swil. They got it, all of it (I can't believe they got the whole thing). Item 3 -- (An historic moment) Michael Swanwick came to Swarthmore. He spoke. We listened and asked questions. It was memorable. "I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats." Item 3 -- Jed's driver's license expired, and much fun was had by all. Thanks Jed and Michael. Item 4 -- Movie Madness -- Andy tells us that Prince is doing the sound-track for the Batman movie (chorus of boos). Andy also tells us that Terry Gilliam is directing the Watchman movied (chorus of cheers). Item 5 -- "Bem dead-line approaching." "What do you mean, Bem dead-line approaching? Open fire, all weapo ..." Wrong answer. Submit to Bem. Deadline -- April 1st. "Real Soon!!" Item 6 -- Visitors -- Associate non-members Jay, Sylvia, and Dave, Honorary Non-member John, and Rick's friends Veg and Greg were all there. Well, that about wraps it up for this special wide, double edition, cosmically important, before-and-after break, not so long ago nor so far away Swilnews. Until next time, 4
