SWIL NEWS January n<31 page 1 Hello! We're leaders of SWIL! This is the title Alison has suggested for me and Jed. No. not "l.eaders"--Weyrleaders. Jed and I like it very much, and so if there are no obJections we will adopt it. If any of you haven't heard the word, it is from Anne McCaffrey's Draagnriders of Pern series. In attendance last time were Ste~an. Irene, Sherry. Alison. Esther, Neil. Ellen, Jack, Matt Wall, Heather, Gavin, Ben Felzer, and Scott. as well as the Weyrman and Weyrwoman. (Wow... a ~ull wing!) Due to a slight foulup, ~or which we apologize, we were in a room with not quite enough space, but we should be back to our regular room next week (Remember that we will still be meeting on Sunday. however.) The main topic of discussion was the upcoming filksing, which is upcoming this Saturday (if that is the 4th). It will start after the first showing o~ the movie. in Lodge 6. and should, if held according to tradition, run until midnight. Sherry has promised to draft people in Parrish to make posters advertising it; the rest of us are responsible for seeing that at least one poster goes up in our dorm. (Those of us in Willets could branch out into DuPont or some such, since Willets hardly needs that many posters. Neil owns a hot-air popper, which he will bring; Gavin will contribute popcorn. I (Shoshanna) will provide Coke or cider or some such. As the song says, if you want any more, you gotta bring it yourself. Matt K. is rumoured to play the guitar. Matt, will you bring it to the filksing, please? Ellen says she'll bring hers if Matt brings his. (!) I will also speak to Lo'rna Shurkin in the News Offich to ensure , that we get publicity in the Weekly News. Jack raised the issue that our off-beat "bylaws". specifically the "vot ing non-member II clause, mi gh t beg i ving us a bad reputat i on on campus and scaring some people off. We were worried about this last year as well; this year's Student Handbook description was toned down from last year's quite a bit. After much discussion we took a vote on whether to change the terminology to straight-forward membership; Jack was defeated everybody to one. We will probably reconsider this when it comes time to write our description for next year's Student Handbook. We mentioned the question of what happens to a member (voting non-member) who stops coming to meetings; Gavin suggested that such a one be dismembered. The motion died in committee. Tarbles is showing six or seven mo~'ies this year that have been shown here in the past four years. This is against Budget Committee policy. under which we have had funding for movies denied to us. Neil is writing a letter of protest to Budget Committee, which he will bring to next meeting, with luck. so we can all sign it. It has been suggested that in order to avoid possible financial retribution we sign it as concerned students and not as SWIL incarnate. For Doctor Who fans: Tom Baker will be at Creation Con in Philly. February 11-12. It is thought that the hotel will be the Philadelphia Center Hotel. which is near Suburban Station. Admission is $11. This information is tentative; if you know anything definite please put it SWIL NEWS January n<31 page 2 .SWIL.NOTICES.CONVENTIONS. Jed is going to ask Mike Dryer, head of Movie Committee, what day ! racula is scheduled for. It should be a Sunday in February. Once he nowsl ~ed will try to reserve Clothier for that night and to assure us some projectionists. i The new Star Trek movie is supposed to open on Easter. There is great , support for the idea of renting the Student Council van and going en masse to see it (Easter is two weeks before finals). We will consider the idea again in Marchi if you hear anything definite on when it opens please let everyone know. The ~anuary us sue of LOCUS is in Cornell. Read it for all the latest. The following information was in SWIL.NOTICES and is for the edification of those not satisfied with trivial gossip about Harrison Ford's marriage and Leonard Nimoy's salary: Did anyone else know that Samual Delaney is a person of ambiguous sexual persuasion, as is his (yes) his wife7' [Yes, Alex McHale informed us of that during the days when he was here. NAOJ Although it has nothing to do with science fictionl Ellen wants everyone to know that Who's Afraid of VirGinia ~olf is the best movie ever made, and will be showing here sometime soon. \~ Yours from between, Shoshanna and Jed
