Just SWILNews #9 It was the last day before the end of the world. Your loyal co-presidents were well-prepared. They had stocked the bad-ass minivan of doom with all the necessary food and supplies, and had stationed themselves a mere 20 miles from said bad-ass minivan. At the stroke of midnight (wait, i didn't hear any bells -d), in a fiery blaze, the prophecy of the elders came true. Every light in the greater Boston area was extinguished. Men cried, women screamed, children (were above average? -d) thought the whole thing was pretty cool. "Oh, shit," said Cloak, "the T isn't running. How do we get back to Newton?" Fortunately, Dagger had a plan. "There's Beacon Street. We walk." Cloak did not like the plan, but that was just too bad for her. So Cloak and Dagger set off on the long trek to Newton, their one remaining loyal follower trailing forlornly behind. (That would be Amy', for those not paying attention at home.) Now, if you were stuck with two other SWIL nonmembers on a twenty-mile hike across a cold, panicked, empty shell of a city, you'd probably think of lots of interesting things to talk about while you were walking. Good for you. Instead, we discussed SWILBusiness: (Opening quote: "Elliot is proclaiming himself a guy who can stand up. Make him stop." -Cloak) Lots of stuff happened which is now irrelevant. Then we discussed speakers, which are not irrelevant, since we still don't have one. Places of residence for some of the proposed speakers were established: - Susan Cooper (CT) - Tamora Pierce (NYC) - Charles DeLint (Ottawa) - Jane Yolen (MA) - Robin McKinley (England) - Norton Juster (MA) - Leonard Nimoy (somewhere) Hollis suggested William Goldman (author of "The Princess Bride"). We should ask Jim about this speaker that Rebecca remembers. If he says anything interesting, let us know - we're curious. Forum for Free Speech (the speaker money people) doesn't pay for travel, so airfare is right out. Someone suggested Kurt Vonnegut. Abby offers to drive reasonable distances (i.e. New York) to get people. We need to go visit Lloyd Alexander. More about this when/if (when -c) it actually happens. Dan Blim thinks we should reenact the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, since it's his favourite. We're ignoring him. Submit to BEM. If you have a homepage, and would like it to be linked from the SWIL web page (http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/org/swil), e-mail the webmasters (webmaster @ swil.org) and tell them where your page is. Non-SWILBusiness: There was a poker night. People liked it, but Cloak didn't get to go because she was trapped evilly in the really awesome Moxy Fruvous concert. (funny definition of "evilly" you've got. -d) So we should have another one sometime. Apparently we wanted to kick somebody's butt. As far as we know, we haven't yet, so watch out. We suspect Lindsay of coming up with this idea. The attendance list of pigeons, sex, literature, and life and death - 13 November 1999: Arcadia ""People say that Stoppard's plays are esoteric and cold, but _Arcadia_ is full of passion." -Stephen Sondheim.
