From chaos at cs.swarthmore.edu Sat Jul 17 20:05:14 1999 Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 16:47:11 -0500 (EST) From: Chaos Golubitsky To: _swat.org.swil at cc Subject: We Need an Osmoregulation, or SWILNews #6 Theoretically, if an infinite number of monkeys are allowed to type for an infinite amount of time, they will eventually produce Hamlet. So, we decided to try producing our SWILNews by the same method. Unfortunately, the bio department was inexplicably stingy about letting us borrow an infinite number of monkeys and most of the public area machines in Beardsley were being occupied this afternoon anyway. So we had to make do with the available animals around Mary Lyons, namely Kaski and Rosie (the quint rats) and Peggy (Anna's cockatiel). Rosie isn't completely housetrained, so she's not allowed to sit on the keyboard, Kaski's first attempt went something like "asdlf 545-(Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?)", and Peggy just typed "Where's Anna?" repeatedly, so we relegated them to writing comments. SWIL Business: Robert is throwing pens. (Yes, this is SWIL business. Want to know what else is? I thought not... -H) SWILoween, SWIL's annual Halloween party, is happening 31 October in Sharples 3, from 9pm to 11am. There will be lots of gaming and socializing, probably including mafia, the m&m game, charades, and the every-popular, quasi-infamous truth or dare. Give Lindsay $3 or so by Friday so she can buy food. If you're bringing food, tell Lindsay. Bring sleeping bags and pillows if you want, since we have the room till 11. Help setting things up beforehand would be appreciated. Pumpkin carolling will also be on 31 October. Pumpkin carolling is our solution to the problem that, since we're not around at Christmastime, we have no excuse to go knock on people's doors and sing at them. To this end, we have rewritten several Christmas carols with Halloween-relevant words, and we go door-to-door singing at the locals. So, find out where your favourite prof lives and come join us. We'll be meeting at 6:15pm at Parrish Parlours. Wear costumes. It was suggested that we phone Al Bloom and tell him to be home this year. Philcon is still the weekend of 13-15 November. Please let Kira know if you want to register, for $35, or contact Jess (jharbour at sccs), who's trying to sell her ticket. Between 35 and 40 people are confirmed to come to SWIL's 20th reunion, which is happening 6-8 November. If you didn't sign up to volunteer floor space for alums and would like to, contact reunion at swil.org. If you did sign up, the OOB will let you know if your room has been selected to receive an alumni. Reunion festivities are open to current students. If you want to be involved in activity-planning, subscribe to the list plan-20 at swil.org. Megan found out that we can reserve the small room in Sharples for Saturday's SWIL meeting, if we want, so we'll have to discuss that. SWIL has a folder on the cc's activities server. There's a bunch of cool stuff on there, which you should look at, including complete author lists, recommended reading lists, and other neat stuff. Take a look, and tell Chaos what else you'd like to see there. The pterodactyl hunt happened, and was a lot of fun for all involved. We'll talk about it and tell stories at next Saturday's meeting, so bring your favourite stories of triumph, woe, and being hit in the eye with things. "The Craft" was the SWIL movie this week. In the completely unbiased and objective opinion of the valkyries, it sucked. (Hey, i liked it... -G) (I haven't even seen it yet... -S) (Okay, fine, in *my* opinion, it sucked. -H) Next week's movie is "Flight of the Navigator". Non-SWIL Business "Circling the Square", Greg Ingber and Josh Lifton's conspiracy-theory talk show, airs on WSRN at 10pm Sundays. Greg will also be in senior company, 11-13 December. Everyone should come see it to find out who gets naked. Story Reading will happen Sunday, 1 November, at 7pm in Greylock 301 (Jim's apartment.) Megan will be showing Buffy, the Vampire Slayer tonight at 8 and 10pm. "Halloween" will show at 8, and some as-yet-undetermined episode will show at 10, so if you have an opinion (and are actually planning to come), tell her. Babylon 5 starts new episodes this Wednesday at 10pm. You can watch it at Jim's, either in real time, or Monday at 7:30pm. There will be a Halloween contra dance Friday, 30 October. It's fun, and there are lots of neat musicians coming, so you should all go. Lindsay is taking several trips (opium, crack, LSD... -S). First, she's going to New York 16 and 17 December to see the Rockettes. She also wants to go into Philly on the weekend of Philcon to see "Chicago". If you're interested in either trip, contact her at lnherron at sccs. Jim's having a telescope night on Parrish Beach at 8pm, weather permitting.
