Date: Sat, 23 Sep 1995 12:08:09 -0400 Subject: SWILnews #2 Hi. This is the first SWILnews which is going out to all of the new, glisteningly ripe freshlings who were unwise enough to scrawl their names on our email list. What James means to say is, this is the first of a host of important and informative documents being sent out to the members of the class of '99 we deem worthy enough to recieve them. Cherish these postings for, as we seniors know, they pass all too quickly and soon will be but a distant memory. Pardon me, but I have to cry now. [TGP buries himself in J's armchair, which soon becomes quite squishy and damp.-J] The following 10K of mindless drivel is a rough overview of what went on in last Saturday's meeting and over the course of the following week. [Some might say that since this SWILnews is a week late this last comment is not entirely accurate. To them who say this we say... Pbpbpbpbt! -TGP] [Or to quote Jane Austen, "Ha-ha!" -J] SWIL-business: First off, a reminder: The SWILlocker is Tarble 42, and the combination is 3-2-1-15. Now, while some might think it unwise to give out this information to all of SWIL we firmly believe that non-members of SWIL are lawful, scrupulous individuals who would never put large amounts of moldy fruit in a confined space. Would they? It has been noticed that the SWIL bulletin board in Parrish -the one on the end of the short hallway across from the second half of the alphabets' mailboxes, has been bare since at least the summer. Snibor Eoj, retiring Minister of Propaganda has been dispatched to put SWIL paraphernalia up on said bulletin board for all of us to admire and to lure in the curious. Any suggestions or submissions for the board should be referred to him. Ideally, we'd have a copy of the charter, photos (Melissa?) of various events, announcements and, now that my printer is working, printouts of the SWILnews for those of you who don't check mail. Freshlings, freshlings, freshlings...TGP has noted that we got about 25 new people signed up at the activities fair which is pretty good considering jere7my was sitting at the table a lot of the time. [Muahahahaha! -J and TGP] James has decided to preserve the following bit of news in the form of The Giant Peach's original notes, as they best preserve the spirit of the event: ------------------------------------------------ Live Chess happened Sunday at 2:00 -was not contest chess -did include moldy red carpet squares -was fun for all ------------------------------------------------ It has been noted that the Cordwainer Bird Science Fiction Library in Cornell needs some serious work. It has also been noted that there is a contingent who would like to start a video library. Unfortunately, both concerns were whispered into The Giant Peach's ears simultaneously, causing him to feel a ringing in his auditory passages which caused both issues to be tabled till next week. For those of you who were not able to gratify your desire for mead and an impressively outsized sword last fall, it looks as thought the annual Renfaire trip may actuallly happen this year. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire runs through October 8, and we have several people who can and will drive cars or vans. Saturday during the day looks to be the best time for people to go. Most likely, the trip will occur in about 2 weeks. The perpetually curious Erik has been dispatched to look into getting a van for it. He was last seen eagerly peering into shuttles until the finer points of the mission were explained to him. Pterodactyl Hunt wizards will be decided on in one of the next two meetings. In the past we have had one experienced and one unexperienced SWIL non-member run the hunt. Organization and scheduling will be discussed at next week's meeting. Rumor has it that t-shirt distribution is done for now. [Woo hoo!!! -J] Of course, unless we can find a way to stop the passage of time, we'll be dealing with them again in a few months. Quick, someone get in touch with the physics department! Non-SWIL Business: Eoj still intends to show episodes of _Twin Peaks_ sometime after meetings. Either we won't be able to see them all or we'll have to show two hours' worth a week due to the fact that there are about 27 episodes plus_ Fire Walk With Me_. Larry Miller might start the Tick Fix up again if there is sufficient interest. This might be a good thing to do in conjunction with another viewing of, say, _Twin Peaks_ or even one of jere7my's weekly viewing times (Thurs. or Fri.) On the role-playing front, jere7my and Fred Bush will be continuing their games. Larry Miller wants people to e-mail him if they are interested in participating in a Star Wars campaign. Eoj and Fred are still gauging interest for a campaign of Amber. Send them e-mail as well if you would like to play or perhaps need to know more about this interesting diceless role-playing game. Jere7my gave an exhaustive discussion of what is afoot on his television and has continued to do so over the internet. Somebody ought to show up at his apartment as it appears Kendra hasn't been giving him enough attention. Your options include: Voyager, Babylon 5, Nowhere Man, X-Files, or strange luck. Finally, there was a thrilling WWF simulation in ML lounge last Saturday as people engaged in the first game of wink of the semester. We will definitely need to get another game together soon to include both the new frosh and a certain co-president who was in Baltimore and didn't get to play. That's the news, in one form or another, now this co-president [J] is going to hustle over to this week's meeting and meet the calloused gaze of her partner in hegemony and explain why we're still one SWIlnews behind. So she'll leave you with the... Attendance (9/9/95): Neil Epstein, (a.k.a. "My Real Name") Dan Eisenbud, Jeremy "quux" Dilatush, Stephanie "Put the table down!"
