Swilnews 1989, Vol. 2, Issue #0 Our story continues ... Chapter 14 ... Just before noon on Saturday, Sept.2 in the year 1989, a train of 14 bedraggled (how do you raggle a bed?) figures snuck past the Customs checker in Sharples dining hall and assembled in a small interior chamber of the building. An enterprising manager spotted the interlopers and followed them in. "Who are you?" he demanded. One figure turned, a strange light glowing in his eyes. "Thorin son of Thrain son of Thror, King Under the Mountain! I have returned!!" The manager smiled knowingly. "Oh, you're here for the Swil meeting. It doesn't start until noon, but I'm sure they'll be here soon." And so it goes. Well, perhaps it won't go quite like that, but there will be a Swil meeting at noon on Saturday, Sept. 2, the first of the second half of the meetings run by The Four of Us. Maybe some enterprising (I wonder how many times we can use the word "enterprise" in this news without referring to Star Trek?) freshfolk will show up, maybe not. In any case, we'll be there, and We have three items of unfinished business to attend to from last May ... ATTENDANCE #~x~= (Ha! let's see you put THAT on a Swilnews!) [It's only an approximation of the actual figure -- ed. note], moi qui escrit, Joel & 27 8-by-10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a [some symbol] on the back of each one ..., Alex "I explained the complete Phoenix saga to someone and lived!", Bruce "Welcome to the honors program. Here are your 57 practice exams." Hahne, Ed "I will not mention finals, comic books, foreign languages or good songs, if there's nobody watching" Berns "what a long attendance name this has become" tein, Luke "Sleep? We don't need no bloody SLEEP" Hankins, Naomi "Uh Oh .. this is my third consecutive SWIL meeting" Parkhurst, Jeff "Whimper" Hildebrand, Rick "Ouch!" Post, Josh "the original" Foster, Laura "Who me, Tetris?" A. VOLUNTEERS Ah, you thought we'd forget over the course of a long, hot, mind-numbing summer. But you forget, We're Competent. And now, just to refresh your memories of what you volunteered to do at the end of last year, here's the list-- Pterodactyl Hunt -- Josh, Peter, Luke -- Orientation -- Ed, Bruce, Jeff, Chris, Laura, Fran -- T-shirts -- Jeff H. -- Schlock-- Chris [Argh, caught by the competence of my co-presidents!] -- Bem -- Jed -- Halloween party -- Rick -- Live Chess -- No one yet. Cliff-hangers As you may remember, there was a cliff-hanger in the last swilnews of Vol. 1. Well, in the best tradition of serials created on Fridays, I must tell you that no one shot J.R., it was all a bad dream, I never liked suspense anyway, and Santa Claus doesn't come down chimneys, he uses a short-range teleporter. Now we have taken care of business obligations, a bit of news ... There will be Live Chess on Parrish lawn following the activities fair Saturday afternoon. The Official Ambassador of 1989 Swil, Loremaster Jed, is at Worldcon in Boston this week-end, and will return with Stories to Tell [Ah, now I've put him on the spot ..] Whew, that's enough news for now. Welcome back, see you Saturday, we'll do lunch, and ("Congratulations, Flash! You've saved your Earth") Have a nice day!! 4
