SWILnews #9-10 for the weeks of November 13 - 26, 1988. EVENTS: Nominations for the presidency of SWIL for the coming year will be made on December 3. Voting will occur the following week, December 10. All non-members are eligible to vote. If you want to be eligible to vote but aren't yet, there's still just barely time to attend the next three consecutive meetings. If, however, you also won't be here over Thanksgiving, talk to me and maybe we can work something out. Cordwainer Bird Memorial Library now has the extra shelves it needed; all the books actually fit on shelves! Because of this new development, we can begin to spend our book budget; there will be a list on the SWIL board to which you can add titles you think we should get. Chris Cobb is in the process of organizing a student-run science fiction class, to be supervised by Professor Abbe Blum, next semester. If you're interested, talk to Chris about it SOON (the proposal is due Dec. 1). We need to have a group picture taken for the yearbook; I guess December 3 is as good a time as any for that, as well. A BOOK: No detailed review this time, but a recommendation for _Easy Travel to Other Planets_, by Ted Mooney. It's certainly sf by my definition, but I suspect many people wouldn't agree. It takes place in the not-too-distant future and switches points of view a lot (it even has parts from the point of view of the moon and from that of the main dolphin character as well as several main human characters). Antarctica is sort of being colonized and there's a lot of international tension over it. A literally new emotion is sweeping the country. People are coming down with information sickness. And yet, people are still living their lives more or less as people live their lives now. I particularly like Mooney's writing style, though I know that it won't appeal to everyone. The book is in McCabe: its call number is PS3563.O567E2 1981. ATTENDANCE: Well, uh, the attendance list for the meeting two weeks ago sorta got lost. Sorry. I do know, though, that Ed Bernstein and Andy Perry became our newest nonmembers by attending their third consecutive meeting. Here's the attendance for the latest meeting: Well, uh, the attendance list for THAT meeting seems to have disappeared as well. I blame Michael (yeah, that's the ticket). Sorry about that. Curses. "Without moving, he assumes the first return posture, or sea brother's pose. Through his mind, like a stream of bubbles, pass the 9,017 names for the taste of water." Foiled again, The Jed Baron (Jed Hartman) (it's been awhile since I've put the following information here (and it's not in the off-campus directory), so I'm repeating it: my telephone number is 543-4882. If you have questions or comments about SWIL, don't hesitate to give me a call anytime between 12:00 and 12:00. And don't be put off by the answering machine if nobody's home, or by my roommate if he is home.)
