SWILnews #11-12 for the weeks of Nov. 27 - Dec. 10, 1988. EVENTS: Apologies again for no SWILnews last week. Once last semester I was asked to not do a SWILnews if there were no news, and last week there was very little. But now, for your delectation and enjoyment, what will surely be one of my last SWILnewses ever: Nominations were made. Nominations were rejected. In fact, only two nominations for next year's Presidence d'SWIL (excuse my pseudo-French) were accepted: one for Chris Cobb and Laura Almasy, and one for Laura Almasy and Chris Cobb. In the spirit of democracy, I asked for more nominations, but none were forthcoming and someone pointed out that, this being a Quaker school, it's okay to do some things by consensus every now and then. And it will certainly save the wear and tear on our fingers of having to write people's names on paper, though if anyone insists, we can still carry out the formalities of voting at the coming meeting. Oh, and Harry Tuttle has also been nominated; for those of you not familiar with him, he's the dashing Central Services outlaw played by Robert de Niro in _Brazil_. There was a campaign to elect him to SJC two years ago, but he didn't get enough votes. Or something. After the meeting on 12/10 (this coming Saturday) will be a BEM meeting for anyone interested. Talk to Kir Talmage for more details. This year's BEM is open to alumni, though so far none have submitted anything (actually, I think that statement is true of current students as well). We have a suggestion for a t-shirt design, possibly the earliest in the year that such has ever been made: Jeff Hildebrand has submitted a front-and-back shirt design with the words "Life, the Universe, and SWIL" on the front and "Don't Panic" and "42" on the back. Actual t-shirt decisions and such will be made next semester, as Garth Snyder, currently on leave, is in charge of doing this year's shirts. In other t-shirt news, some or most of the reunion and reprint shirts are in and may be picked up from Julie (after payment, of course). ATTENDANCE: The attendance list for the Thanksgiving "meeting" (at which we didn't have a minyon (in base ten, anyway)) reads as follows: NO ONE SHOWED UP.; Neither did I; Therefore, we did not have a _show down_.; Josh "I showed up! pththphthpth" Smith; Topher "Chocolate donuts and melons"; Phenolphthalein "Fran/Max"; The Red Jeddak of SMERSH; The Moskowitz Entourage; and The Spanish Inquisition couped _again_. And here's more attendance, this one for the 12/3 meeting: Luke "HAH, I'm first" Hankins; Glenn "HAH, I'm not" Rutan; Kir "Hah, I don't live in RCB" Talmage; Brian Inouye; Jeff "Davros": Hildebrand; Andy "I can't think of anything funny" Perry; White Dove's Sister; Thibberty-gibbet; Jim T.M.I. Moskowitz; Bruce of the many physics seminars; Chris "J" Cobb; Josh "I _am_ above the law" Smith; Alex "the fastest production lawnmower made" Weirich; Rick "Emily" Post [editorial note: this gets my vote for funniest name on list this week]; >buzz!< no fruit; Josh "and I'm above _him_" Mackay-Smith; Ego Rogers; me, of course; Anaid is here; and Aren Atz. "I _am_ the law!" judiciously, Judge Jedd (Jed Hartman) (Good thing the semester's almost over. I'm nearly out of titles.)
