SWILnews Volume 7 Number 5 October n<13, 1984 Hello to all the SWILfolk. At the semi-official meeting over break were present Shoshanna Green, John Beale, Julie Patrick and a friend named Dave, Esther Oey, Heather Whipple, Jon Rapkin, Connie Willis (guess who), and Ed Ervin. Sherry Hartenstine and Dan Levi dragged in straight from GREs, poor things, bringing a non-SWILtype, Betsy Davies. Two unidentified people hung out in the far corner, and Ursula LeGuin, Zenna Henderson, Kate Wilhelm, and Joan Vinge all showed up claiming to be the Board of Managers. Now seriously, could going home have been this interesting? For any aspiring authors, Julie may have a copy of Asimov's SF Magazine with an article on the teaching of sf writing, talking about a program in Michigan (I think it's the Clarendon program). Ask her about it if you're interested. She also recommends Larry Niven and Steve Barnes' book _Dream_Park_ to gamers. John reports that the only place on campus his roommate could find a copy of Plato's Republic was the Cordwainer Bird Memorial SF Library. There is some support for a reading at the Halloween party. Traditionally in Halloween readings we limit Bradbury and Bloch stories to one each; Julie already has a Bloch story in mind. So start thinking about this. Stories for reading should not take more than ten minutes or so to read, and should be appropriately eerie. Also on this subject, Sherry will at some point be taking up a collection to fund the party. Everyone who was there wants to take seven bucks from the budget and buy the filkbooks. Shall we? Let's! The new LOCUS is probably in Cornell by now. -->Important dates: Oct 26: the Pterodactyl Hunt Nov 2: the Halloween party --10:00 A meeting should be held soon to organize the Pterodactyl Hunt. Perry and Eric, please announce when. Interested people contact them. May you never thirst Shoshanna and Jed "in spirit, anyway!"
