SWIL NEWS Volume 7 Number 1 September n<15, 1984 Hello, folks! Welcome to the first SWILnews of the 1984-85 school year. Present at the first meeting were Irene Ghatt, Shoshanna Green (your friendly typist), Sherry Hartenstine, Ellen Sasse, Gavin Schnitzler, Jay Scott (a. k. a. Ursula LeGuin), Jed Shumsky, Jack Sutherland, John Beale, Mike Caspar, David Coates, Eric Cohen, Perry Deess, Vinny Murrell, Claudia Sorsby, Chris Sparno, Steve Ward, Ruth Alfasso, Kevin Murphy, Jim Crawford and Ken Mayer. Matt Wall and Alison Knapp also dropped in for a few moments. Whew! That brings up the first thing I have to menticn, which is that SWIL's mailing list has doubled. Hurray! It's wonderful to have all these new faces of new people interested in fantasy/sf. Unfortunately, there is the problem of sending SWILnewses to everyone. I know we promised everyone who signed up at the Activities Fair at least one piece of mail a week, but circumstances beyond our control may prevent this. Bluntly, we can't spool and stuff ninety SWILnewses a week. So I am very sad to say that we are going to have to institute the following policy: anyone who does not come to one of the first three meetings, or send me or Jed a note saying they couldn't, will be taken off the mailing list. Please note that a copy of SWILnews is always put on the SWILboard for everyone to read. I really am sorry about this. The idea is not to send copies to people who thought they were interested and changed their minds. (All voting non-members and anyone who comes to a meeting are exempt from this.) If we turn out to have dozens of active members, something will be arranged. Again, I apologize. On to more cheery stuff: much of the meeting was informational. This information breaks down into the following categories: _MOVIES:_ We will be cosponsoring "Blade Runner" with Movie Committee at the end of this month, and showing "Fahrenheit 451" later in the semester. (It has been ordered; we just don't know the exact date yet.) Next semester we will be bringing "Metropolis" (the original, not the remake), and there is a chance that we will be able to afford a schlock film, say "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers" or similar garbage, as well. ((SWIL-sponsored activities: We have a Halloween party each year. Anyone interested in helping to organize this should probably talk to Sherry. We run the Pterodactyl Hunt (sort of like live D&D. but more fun) during Oktoberfest. If you are interested in helping work on this, come to a meeting; ideas are being tossed around. From time to time we have readings or filksings, i. e. we get together to read short stories, or sing silly sf-related songs. The Halloween party is a good time for a horror reading. If you want to see what the songs are like, look in the SWIL computer account under MICROFILK or ask at a meeting. A book of these songs will be put in the sf library, about which more later. Please start thinking about doing something for BEM or designing a T-shirt. _F+SF_resources_on_campus:_ SWIL maintains a small SF library in Cornell, on the second floor in the back lounge area. The card system is separate from Cornell's; don't bring books to the Cornell desksitter, just read and follow the notice posted on the shelves. There is also a list of sf in McCabe there. And Cornell itself has a subscription to LOCUS, an extremely good and informatiive magazine on what's happening. It's with the periodicals on the main floor; ask the desksitter if you can't find it. SWIL also has a computer account. All voting non-members should have full rights and be owners; anyone else can get LUR access (i. e. to look at anything but change nothing) by asking any voting non-member to give it to them. _MISC.:_ There is an apa which has grown out of SWIL, called SWAPA. An apa is kind of a communal letter; all members send in 25, or however many copies, and they are collated and sent back out. It's interesting and fun. All SWIL members are welcome to join. Collation will be here at SWAT for the next two months; in fact, next one is scheduled for this Sat., after the meeting. If you would like to join or find out more, talk to Shoshanna. Alison had lots of neat news aboutt upcoming books--no room to print it here, so look in LOCUS or in the file SWIL.NOTICES in the SWIL account. 'till next week: Shoshanna and Jed
