SWILnews #4 (volume 4 ) Minutes of the meeting, 10/18/81 The meeting was called to order at 11:41. The discussion groups were discussed, and various information was given about meeting times and readings. Since a more coherent presentation of that information should follow, we will skip ahead. Jennie reported that Norman Spinrad can't give us an answer to our invitation to the February workshop on such long notice. He'll be glad to come it we can guarantee to pay his transportation from wherever he is, but since there's some chance that may be California we can't make such a promise. Anne suggested, and all agreed that we should write (once again) to those writers we have written to before. Everyone was asked if they could think of anyone else they would like to have come. (that is, or might be, within our price range) but no new names were forthcoming. ((Having had time to think about it, does anyone now have any new ideas?)) 11:52 Alumna Tina Anderson enters to applause and the great confusion of some of the freshmen (and/or women). 11:56 It was decided that SWIL should send a card to Joan Vinge and child (or rather that Jennie should send a card and sign it SWIL) as soon as we could find out whether everything was alright with them. ((I haven't heard anything yet, has anyone?)) Rehash of the writers being asked to the workshop, besides Somtow, who is definitely coming, we have/will ask(ed) Charles Sheffield (very science oriented) ; Norman Spinrad (New Wave); David Hartman (as if we didn't have enough. Davids around here) ( Editor of _Timescape_Books_); or rather. 12:04 Sylvia suggests a reading of stories by these people. This was reluctantly naysayed (sp?) because they are either editors, or they write very _long_ short stories. People are encou raged to read these stories on their own. For suggestions, see Jennie, who also ha two of Neil's _IAsfm_ that have stories by Somtow in them. 12:09 The distinction between New Wave and the rest of SF was discussed New Wave: Chiefly concerned with characters, motivation and the effect of possible future situations on individual people. The rest of SF is whatever is not new wave. 12:15 It was decided that instead or a movie, we should try to get Mike Jitlov to come speak here and perhaps show some of his films. (Jitlov made, among other great shorts. The Wizard of Speed and Time.) Debbie told us that one of her professors had asked her if SWIL members might be interested in ordering books directly from a book warehouse, we get a 25% discount for an order of $100.00 or more. Sherry suggested that SWIL should have a hal1oween party and was promptly saddled with the responsibility for it. The meeting degenerated to chaos. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SWIL NEWS #4 Page 2 minutes of the meeting, 10/25/81 The discussion groups were discussed again. Coherent and up-to-date information follows. IT was decided that there would be an emergency SWIL meeting on Wednesday at dinner to discuss movies The halloween party was discussed and the price of admission set. Minutes of the emergency meeting, 10/28/81 It was decided after much debate to try to get one one of the following, in order of preference, and unfortunately also in order of unlikeli- hood: 1) Mike Jitlov in person to talk about his films 2) _Simon_ (cost $215 6 our movie budget is $200, but we can probably get some sort of discount.) to be shown 4/4/82 3) _The_Thing_ to be shown 3/28/81 & _When_Worlds_Collide_ to be shown 4/25/82. If finances permit we will also get a Star Trek blooper or 2. minutes of the meeting, 11/1/81 Everything was rediscussed. There will be a meeting of all interested parties at Wednesday lunch to look at the catalogue of books we can order and to talk to Prof Platt (I think that was the name. Debbie?) If you can' t come to the meeting. try to find Debbie, as she has the catalogue. the filks, and pertinent information are in the Cordwainer Bird Memorial Library. Please don't use the Prime unless you know how. (For these of you who were not at the last meeting, SWIL now has a computer account, and will be using it for the computerized book list and for storing and duplicating FILKS.) ________________________________________________________________________________ | IMPORTANT NOTICE | | For any new SWILers who have not been able to find us, SWIL meets every Sunday | | in one of the small reserved dining rooms by the salad bar in Sharples. | | Meetings start at 11:30, or whenever we have a minyan. | | If you wish to remain on the SWIL mailing list, please let me know as soon as | | possible through college mail.
